In November 2008, we discovered an issue that allowed players to create multiple items for certain treasures and rewards in areas such as Salvage and Assault by exploiting the game system.

The issue was fixed during emergency maintenance on November 26, 2008. However, we discovered that some players had already exploited the issue and used it to gain additional items before it was addressed. We then investigated more than a year's worth of logs throughout all areas.

As a result of the investigation, approximately 400 players were temporarily suspended based on the evidence gathered. Approximately 550 players who committed more serious misconduct had their accounts banned.

We are working hard to ensure that these kinds of issues do not occur again in FINAL FANTASY XI. However, if you discover any problems with the game system, please submit a GM call or fill out the feedback e-mail form to report the problems to us, instead of exploiting or spreading the issue.

We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

I agree to an extent. I heard some people were banned by mere association, but those seemed to be temp-bans anyway? The active cheaters deserve it. The ones who truly were just bystanders should at least get a chance to explain themselves.

It makes me glad I'm not in any endgame related things yet, but sad that a lot of shells are torn apart now.

Ya after reading the BG thread yesterday it looks like SE did a good job in their bannings this time round. Most of the people who were just "associated" with it or like only did it once or twice got a 72 hours ban (not that bad, go outside or something) and those people who were orchestrating it or did it tons that ended up perma'd. Wonder if they will take the items away from people who got temp banned.

What gets me the most is how they try to justify cheating.

I know how these ppl feel (myself got perm banned on Xiath some while ago. Luckly I had a high lvld mule account so I didnt have start from square 1), but when u brake the TOS, you have to face the music eventually.

Im a person who enjoys kicking someone when they're down, you can call me a horrible person for it but at the end of the day im still able to play a game i enjoy without worrying how long it'll be before Se decide to show me how epic the full force of its boot is. And the fact they try to justify it with "se's codings to blame not me for breaking my tos!" So if you'll excuse me, ill continue to point and laugh at EVERYONE on that list

How much cheating is too much cheating?

SE has banned a metric ton of cheaters of the years. Recently, January 22nd 2009 to be exact, a number of players were banned for exploiting a glitch in FFXI’s programming. The argument for either side is that:

The individuals knew they were taking advantage of a system malfunction, and were rightly punished for cheating.

The software allowed for this to happen, therefore it is the game developer’s fault. The banned players are merely victims of temptation.

Some of the banned players have stated that SE is inconsistent with it’s account bannings. These players have been permanently banned while other violators run amuck. This, as they say, is not fair. Why not focus on these botters and hackers and give these “legitimate” players a warning or a temporary ban? After all, this was SE’s fault for not catching a flaw in the game’s programming right.

Quit QQing people. You cheated, plain and simple. You knew you were doing wrong, being dishonest, taking advantage of a flaw for your own personal goals. Pointing a finger at other violators only makes you look like more of a fool. There will never be an RMT free Vanadiel, they are like cockroaches. SE will continue to deal with them as they appear, and that war will ensue until the servers shut down. No matter how you try to rationalize it, you got busted doing something you knew you should not have. And now, you are banned.

So. How much cheating is too much cheating? Want to find out? Keep using your 3rd party tools, hacks, bots and cheats. Keep abusing in game glitches, instead of reporting them. You will find out.

Keep using your community sites to shine some kind of rose-colored light on the situation. You not only make yourself look like a tool, you discredit your associates as well. It amazes me that some community sites still wonder why SE has not made them a Premiere site.

So. How much cheating is too much cheating?

I guess it is too much cheating when you are screwing over your friends, and not just your self.
